About the role

We’re looking for an experienced design researcher who can bring their expertise and passion for people to our work in improving public services. Design researchers are at the heart of uncovering people's needs, helping to inform design decisions with insight and empathy. They help the wider team develop a deep understanding of the people that use services and the organisations that deliver them.

Responsibilities

  • apply a broad range of creative research methodologies to some of the most complex public policy challenges
  • planning and leading fieldwork with a wide range of actors across a system including citizens, communities, staff and senior stakeholders
  • bring research to life through high-quality deliverables and communicate findings to a wider audience to support and drive decision making
  • collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support all stages of the design process from early problem framing and discovery through to testing and implementation
  • confidently lead and support multiple projects
  • mentor and manage junior design researchers
  • provide creative input into bid requests and help to scope projects

Experience and mindset

  • extensive knowledge and experience of core design research methodologies including contextual interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, prototyping, moderating group conversations and data analysis
  • apply detail, focus and rigour to all research activities but also consider practical constraints and organisational needs
  • advocate for responsible research by considering ethical and accessibility factors throughout
  • translate findings into actionable insights that can inform creative design solutions and decision making
  • see the bigger picture and align research insights with organisational goals
  • worked in agile multidisciplinary teams where you’ve lead research and made a demonstrable impact on the direction of a project
  • comfortable working in complex environments and navigating senior stakeholder groups
  • strong communication and facilitator
  • interested in all things local government and health, digital design and delivering better public services
